Capital Immersion: Brush, Pen, & Pencil with John Stevens
24 July • 9:00 am – 27 July • 4:30 pm
FOUR DAY WORKSHOP – July 24 to 27, 2020
Join us for this incredible workshop with renown master calligrapher John Stevens, invited by the Société des calligraphes de Montréal to teach right here in Montréal. An event not to be missed!
The workshop will be given in English.
In this class we address both stability and freedom; solidity and fluidity. The broad-edge brush shows us the kinetics or anatomy of our beloved Roman letters. Technique centers around flat brush and then a smaller, longer hair brush (slow, deliberate movements).
We closely look at inscriptional letterforms, break them down to analyze them, to get clear about form while developing technique.
When we are confident about our forms and writing, we trust our instincts, and this in turn allows creative leaps. Alphabet Evolution is honoured, yet personal expression is a desirable quality.
How do we progress our work?
What part of letterforms are fundamental or essential (immutable) and which part is mutable/creative? In this part, we explore variations:
Working with both brush and pen, we look at variations: the creative side, so that we take it further than just practicing letters and techniques.
A list of required materials will be sent out to all participants.
The workshop will be held at the Monkland Community Center, 4410 avenue West Hill, Montréal (QC) from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on July 24, 25, 26 and 27, 2020.
