Watercolour for Calligraphers: A Colourful Partnership with Lorna Mulligan (Part 2)
23 September • 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
Two Sundays – September 16, 2017 and September 23, 2018
Watercolour washes and colourful details add expressiveness to our calligraphic pieces. Either for backgrounds, lettering, borders or painted imagery, one needs to understand at least some of the basic skills of this enchanting medium.
In this two-part workshop, we will discover the magic that is watercolour. On the first Sunday we will work on basic exercises in colour mixing, water-to-paint ratios, simple washes, glazing and brush manipulation. During the one week interval participants can practice directed exercises to get more acquainted with this fluid medium. We will begin the second Sunday with an overview discussion of this material. For the rest of the day, emphasis will be on developing an imaginative, individual approach to help us seamlessly combine watercolour with our calligraphy.
Lorna’s vast experience as an artist, graphic designer and calligrapher informs her teaching, allowing her to transmit visual concepts and techniques (as well as her passion) in a very hands-on way in a sharing studio atmosphere.
Each student will receive a supply kit created by Lorna which includes 6 tubes of Holbein watercolours, watercolour paper and three brushes ($100 value).
