Workshop : In search of the essential (November 13th and 20th, 2021)

13 November 2021 • 9:00 am4:30 pm

In this workshop, we will use the Italic hand to dive into the intimacy of the alphabet by undressing the letters to their barest form… to dress them up again in a better and a more personal way.

Using different tools, we will deconstruct the letters and break them apart to the point where they lose their identity.

Thereby we will try to find our own expressive and visual language by integrating these new pictural shapes into the space. Consequently, we will also do an incursion into the composition.

I could have talked about gestural for this workshop. I prefer to talk about the tension of the strokes, expression, appropriation and personal research.

Instructor : Marco Chioini (biography) – Based in Montreal, Marco Chioini has been teaching calligraphy since 2009. He received his principal technique skills from Yannick Durand, from the Scriptorium of Toulouse, who also introduced him to contemporary calligraphy. Thereafter he developed his knowledge alongside world-renowned calligraphers such as Yves Leterme, Thomas Ingmire, Ewan Clayton, Brody Neuenschwander, Carl Rohrs…
In addition to numerous private commissions and weddings, H&M Maison, l’Ordre des traducteurs du Québec and the Opéra de Montréal are amongst his clients. Marco was a member of the group Les Calmars, whose research works have been published in the book Dans l’encre du temps, in 2017. Former president of the Société des calligraphes de Montréal, Marco Chioini was also the director of Rendez-vous 2019, the 38th International Calligraphy Conference, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.
